GDES 100 Introduction to Graphic Design
This intensive ten-week (three-credit) course will familiarize students with the conceptual and technical design process involving color, typography, composition, presentation, and software, including Photoshop and Illustrator. It’s a perfect introduction for students planning to pursue a degree in design. Students learn and gain skills through a combination of lectures, hands-on instruction, and real-life design projects!
Associated Fees: Tuition is free, however there is a nominal registration fee of $20.00, an on-campus parking pass fee of $45.00 (if needed for parking), materials and printing fees during the course approximately $20.00 – $30.00.

2012. CSSSA represents a unique opportunity to spend four-weeks studying and working with professional artists

completing grades 8-12. Students work side-by-side with outstanding university
researchers and faculty exploring advanced topics beyond the typical high school
curriculum in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

UC Davis -Young Scholars Program
The UC Davis Young Scholars Program is a summer residential research program designed
to expose 40, high achieving high school students to the world of original research in the natural
sciences with emphases on the biological, environmental and agricultural sciences. To be eligible
for the summer of 2011, students must be currently enrolled as sophomores or juniors in high school.
Participants in the 2012 UCD-YSP will work one-on-one with research faculty and research groups
instate of the art laboratories for six weeks. Each student will work on an individual project and prepare
a journal quality paper and symposium presentation about their work. In addition to scientific research,
the UCD-YSP strives to introduce participants to the climate and culture of living and working on a
university campus. Staff make every effort to model the experiences that participants will have during
their first years of college.

Join us for the JSA California Institute on Leadership and Politics. You will stay on campus at the
University of California at Davis and will explore the excitement of Golden State politics in the state
capitol during the day. You will learn about the challenges facing California political leaders, meet the
politicians and powerbrokers that make important decisions and gain valuable leadership skills so that
you can make a difference with the issues that impact your life.
A high-level speakers program will allow you to meet and question top political players in an open
environment where you can ask the pressing questions of the day such as: Has California become
ungovernable? How can we improve education and ensure good outcomes for all students? How will
changes to immigration policy impact the citizens of California? What is the solution to balancing the
state budget?
Debates, simulations and other activities will give you the chance to voice your opinions, work with
others and learn from your peers in a tolerant atmosphere. These highly interactive projects allow
students to leverage the information the get from the speakers program to find common ground on
solutions to the challenges that face our state and communities. You will improve your leadership
and public speaking skills as well as learn more about the politics, policies and people that govern
California.
USC / Chevron Frontiers of Energy Resources Summer Camp 2012

Chevron Corporation has come together with USC's Viterbi School of Engineering collobaratively to host
a summer camp for High School Juniors and High School Science and Math Teachers at the University
of Southern California in Los Angeles. The Frontiers of Energy Resources Summer Camp offers a preparatory,
interactive training program focusing on various energy resources including fossil fuels, solar, biofuel, wind,
nuclear energy, and information technologies for energy efficient operations. This unique program is designed to
introduce exceptional high school juniors and as many as 5 high school science or math teachers to the
opportunities and career possibilities available in the global energy resources industry.

Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Conference
Applications for the 30th annual ChicanoLatino Youth Leadership Project bringing 120 high school students from throughout the state to participate in a week-long, intensive leadership program, are now available on their website: www.clylp.org. Students have a unique opportunity to visit the state Capitol to learn firsthand about the legislative process through mock hearings and even have personal interaction with state legislators and legislative staff. Students are also presented with valuable information about college and professional careers. A college fair is also held with top colleges from around the country. Housing, meals, program materials and transportation to and from the conference are provided at NO COST to the participants or their families. To be eligible to apply, students must be enrolled in a California high school at the start of the current academic school year and currently be in the 10th or 11th grade.
