the Business Department curriculum provides students with meaningful instruction for and about business. Instruction in the Business Department encompasses business skills and techniques, an understanding of basic economics, and business attitudes essential to participate in a multinational marketplace as productive workers and consumers.
Business play a major role in preparing a competent, business-literate, and skilled workforce. The department is designed to integrate business and information technology skills into the curriculum. Therefore, the department believes that every student should take at least one course.
Business and Information Technology Education has relevance and helps young adults manage their own financial affairs and make intelligent consumer and business-related choices.
Courses The Business/Computer dept offers:
Desktop Publishing/ (Graphic Arts) where students learn Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and PhotoShop. ( 1 year) At the end of semester II students can take the test to become Application Specialist in Photoshop.
Computer Applications I - students are introduced to the keyboard and learn beginning level Microsoft Word,.
Business Technology – students focus is to learn and use all MS Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Publisher) on integrated projects. Students learn how to integrate the Office programs on various projects. At the end of the semester students can test the test to become Microsoft Certified Application Specialist, know as MCAS formerly MOUS) in the applications.
Second semester students learn MS Access (database management), Corel graphics and Adobe Flash for animation and design web pages.
Web Design – students are introduced to HTML (hyper-text markup language.),
Other software packages are used to get the student familiar with web design and page layout techniques. Afterwards the curriculum focus is on Dreamweaver or Expression to create web pages.
Students will be able to use a variety of strategies and tools to create websites.
e-Marketing - students learn that marketing is a process that includes selling, advertising, market research, product decision-making and distribution. Students ae trained in the buying and selling of goods, services, and ideas in the electronic commerce environment.
Virtual Enterprise
Captstone Class for the BETA Academy is VIRTUAL ENTERPRISE
Virtual Enterprise is a simulated business that is set up and run by students to prepare them for working in a real business environment. With the guidance of a teacher (“consultant”) and real-world business partners, the students determine the nature of their business, its products and services, its management and structure, and engage in the daily operations of running a business. Emphasis is placed on using current business software, communications, and the Internet for business transactions.
In this class during second semester the students also participate in the STOCK MARKET GAME sponsored by Merrill Lynch.
FBLA
We also have an active Future Business Leaders of America, Inc. (FBLA).
FBLA is the premier organization for students preparing for careers in business. It is the largest student business organization in the world with 250,000 members. FBLA prepares students for “real world” professional experiences. Members gain the competitive edge for college and career success.
BUSINESS, entreprenuership & TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY (Beta) has a cluster of career paths in which students can focus their elective studies on a particular career. This will provide the student an opportunity to get specific training, meet working professionals and take high school courses that emphasize how the content can be used in a career, as well as, prepare for the transition to college. It has career paths which includes: Computer Science & Information Systems, Business, Marketing, Entreprenuerhsip, Accounting & Finance Management, Desktop Publishing & Print Technology.
Students must complete 4/5 semesters of the business curriculum and participate in the activities of FBLA. Computer elective classes taken at Toll can be included.
The courses that Beta offers will provide students with an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge and skills in a practical business setting. It will give students the all important advantage in the competitive job market.
